Experience Summary
I earned a Bachelors of Science in Biology with a minor in Environmental Science from Viterbo University. I started tutoring when my religion teacher observed that I was excelling and asked if I would tutor a fellow student. After that I began tutoring remedial math and college algebra. The Math Specialist, who was the coordinator for the Math 001 course, and myself were able to create a structured and effective tutoring method for her remedial math students. I also tutored a semester of Biology 100. I enjoy tutoring because I love seeing a student finally understand the subject matter. I have had the opportunity to work with several personalities and understand how to handle several different social situations.
Teaching Style
As far as teaching style, I think it is important to listen to what the student really needs and adapt your teaching style based on their needs. I've learned with math especially, that you need to work a lot of different problems. However, I usually like to have the student take me through the steps as best they can and then I step in to help or possible show a simpler way to solve the problem. Tutoring is not about your own agenda, it is about the student and what the tutor needs to do help them understand. That is one of the great challenges about tutoring, it will always keep you on your toes and with every student you take away a new learning experience.
