Experience Summary
During my enrollment at the University of Arizona in Tucson, I tutored several students in advanced psychology courses as well as advanced English composition courses to undergraduates. I graduated from the University of Arizona with honors--a member of Psi Chi National Honor Society in Psychology and a memmber of Golden Key National Honor Society.
After graduation, I tutored a high school student in geometry. Lately, I have been tutoring a fifth-grade student in math and reading.
Teaching Style
I believe that applications to everyday life should be stressed if a tutor/teacher is to pique the interest of their student(s).
Rather than stressing rote memorization, I believe it is more important to relate overall concepts in a "partnering" style.
It is important to remember that one of the cornerstones of teaching is making the subject matter interesting and relevant to the student's experiences. I believe it is also important to focus on a student's strengths rather than their weaknesses. As in many areas of life, teaching also requires patience. From my experience, children benefit greatly from an easy-going approach where they are regarded as equals and treated with the utmost respect and dignity.
