Experience Summary
My experience consists of working with students in a classroom as well as working one on one with students through tutoring. While finishing my English Education degree I worked with a tutoring group in low income schools. I worked in a middle school language arts classroom. I have also student taught in a senior English class teaching British Literature including Shakespeare and many other complex literature devices. I spent 3 months as a teacher in a resource English class for 9th graders teaching literature, grammar, and testing skills. I used many pop culture references for students to relate to in their studies.
Teaching Style
My teaching style encourages relating reading and writing to what they are already reading, writing and listening to. If students can understand language and grammar in their own context and how it is useful then it will be better and easier to incorporate into their own writing and reading and therefore more natural. For example, while teaching ballads I introduced a Coldplay and Bob Dylan songs to students to better understand Lord Randall and other ballads of the time. I am driven by watching students succeed as far as test scores are concerned, but also teaching them the life skills that literature introduces to us.
