About Me

Experience Summary

Mathematics was always my best subject; so it was a no brainer to obtain an engineering degree in college. As far as my experience teaching math, I have been a substitute for SDUSD since 2004. The assignments are random, but inevitably students in my math classes report new clarity, etc. Due to this, I considered becoming a math teacher for the district and passed the CSET Math Subtests I, II, and III (which cover Algebra 2, Geometry, and Calculus respectively) between Nov. 2008 and July 2009 in preparation. More importantly however, is my experience tutoring my stepson, Kyle, who 'just didn't get math' when he came to live with me in 2006 at age 12. We started with multiplication tables on flash cards and he ended the 8th grade two years later with a certificate for academic excellence in Algebra 2. Currently, he is in the 9th grade and acing geometry! Math is a beautiful, natural science and I think that I transfer a bit of the passion I have for the subject to Kyle and all my students.

Teaching Style

My parents came of age in the Civil Rights era and they believed that education was the foundation for (economic) freedom. They both have college degrees and it was expected that my siblings and I would matriculate as well. And we did – from great universities after attending ordinary public high schools with good teachers! I still fondly remember Mrs. Gish, my middle school Algebra teacher. She was my biggest fan and encouraged me to always do my best. Due to this personal experience, I know that a teacher’s impact on students’ lives can be both positive and enduring. Therefore, when teaching/tutoring, I strive to develop a rapport with students, establish expectations, and fully support their achievement because I think this is critical to their educational success.
