Experience Summary
I have over two years’ experience as a tutor, beginning shortly after the completion of my undergraduate degree. I have worked with elementary and middle school students on a wide range of subjects in Mathematics and Language Arts. I have experience working with both individuals and groups of students, and have demonstrated patience, unfailing energy, and an easy rapport with young people. I am capable of designing a program of study around the needs and interests of the individual in order to achieve specific, quantifiable goals while keeping my students engaged. At the elementary and middle-school levels, I am capable of tutoring Mathematics and Language Arts. My graduate work has included extensive study of linguistics and English, making me an ideal tutor of English composition at the collegiate level.
Teaching Style
Students who struggle in the classroom have often lost confidence in their ability to learn. Such students often complain that they “hate math” or “hate reading." My overarching goal as a tutor is to overcome this frustration and thereby improve the scholastic performance of my students. Parents are often amazed at the complete reversal of a student’s attitude, once their frustrations are addressed in a one-on-one environment. I begin each new tutoring relationship with an initial assessment of a student's deficiencies and a discussion of their goals. Next, I design a program of study tailored to the student’s needs. In the long term, I keep students engaged by relating the material to their unique interests and challenging them with short, competitive exercises. To date, I have never failed to develop a rapport with each student, build up their confidence in their own abilities, and thereby improve their scholastic performance.
