Experience Summary
I chose to earn a Bachelor's of Science in Mathematics so that I could gain an in-depth understanding of the fundamental Mathematical concepts that I would be teaching as a high school instructor. I then chose a Secondary Education minor so that I could familiarize myself with instructional strategies and gain experience as an intern in both a middle and high school. As a college student I learned about adolescent psychology and how to apply it to my teaching, as well as classroom management tactics. During my first year as a teacher, I taught low-level 10th grade students at an inner city school. There I was able to practice making math interesting, applicable to everyday life, and how to reach students on a personal, individual level.
Teaching Style
I am very clear about my rules and expectations for my students from the beginning. I am also clear about what they can count on from me. I believe that mutual respect is key in a teacher-student relationship. I let my students know that I am available at any time for remediation or to discuss any personal concerns. I value open communication and demonstrating that I am invested in students' success. I believe this develops rapport and gives students motivation and inspiration to learn and grow. I hold my students completely accountable and make sure they understand that their efforts will determine their success in my class. I do not bend rules; it is imperative that students understand that they earn a grade, it is not given to them. I believe that with determination anything is possible, and grades will take care of themselves.
