About Me

Experience Summary

I have had the joy of tutoring students both privately, and in the junior college system, particularly Los Angeles Trade Technical Junior College since 1988. While tutoring at Los Angeles Trade Technical Junior College, I had an excellent opportunity to tutor ESL, students who have English as their second language; I worked with Vietnamese and Hispanic students. I believe that my experience as an undergraduate and graduate student combined with my tutoring experience have given me the skills to tutor students in English grammar and English composition. Because I have an extensive background in American literature, it has provided me with a knowledgeable account of many American historical events; therefore, I can also tutor students in American history courses. I earned my bachelors degree in English with emphasis in American literature and creative writing from the University of Southern California in 1997, and I have over forty hours of graduate coursework in American literature at the University of California Los Angeles. Tutoring is a very important asset to our educational system, and it has benefited many students by helping them to successfully earn their degrees and ultimately realize their goals and dreams. I have always been excited to be a part of their success.

Teaching Style

My teaching style as a tutor is to provide my students with a clear understanding of the coursework that is being taught in their classrooms. My role is to assist their teachers by helping the students to complete their homework assignments, and to help them understand errors made on exams or English compositions. In addition, I encourage my students to have good study habits by rewriting their English papers and practicing English exercises provided in the English grammar workbooks. I believed that the best way for students to learn English grammar and punctuation is to learn the rules of English. For example, once they know the rules of the subject and verb agreement, and why we use commas and semi-colons to avoid writing fragmented sentences, they will have the keys to writing good English papers and a good command of the English language in verbal communications as well.
