Experience Summary
I used to be Professor of General Physics and Electronics taught various types of classes (conference, seminary, and laboratory) in the ITM (School of Aviation and Radio Electronics Engineers), Havana, Cuba. In addition, I worked with multidisciplinary groups in projects of optics and electronics such as, the design and construction with teledetection purpose of a near IR low-resolution focal-plane arrays and its data communication circuit.
I had great experience with laboratory equipments (Physics, Electronics and Chemistry) as optical bench, spectrometer, goniometer, laser, microscopy, the components of the optical tables, signal generator, digital sampling oscilloscope, F.F.T. instrument, data logger, sensors, etc.
While I was a graduate student in the Florida International University, I was Teacher Assistant and taught laboratories class of the Physics Department. In addition, I designed and constructed the Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) biosensor,
I used my skills in the evaluation of the electronics equipments as Engineer/ Technician, under temporary contract, to the company Jair Electronics Corp. The object of this job was prepared an electronics bench to test audio equipments
Teaching Style
My first academic teaching experience began in my second year in High School when I became a physics tutor of my classroom. In this moment, I discovered that the best way to learn is to teach and consider teaching as an integral part of my career.
Understanding how the people learn is the most fascinating aspect of teaching. This process depends of the background of the students, cultural and academic. For this reason, I decided to take my master degree at the FIU. My studies give me the possibility to know the teaching process in this country as graduate student and teacher assistant.
I had a big surprise when I discovered that the students are the same in any place. In general, you can find two kinds of students, the students that they really want to learn and the students that they only want to pass a test. Them, my task as teacher is showed that: “The best way to pass a test is learning”. The memorization of formulas and problems is not a solution; they need to learn to think.
The system “questions and answers” can be used to illustrate step by step the logic of the solution of problems, that it is the principal tool in science. The analyses of these steps are not an easy task and the answers of the students should be used to develop the class. Therefore, my favorite method is: “If you don’t have any question them I have some for you”.
I really enjoy the preparation of class and its development. I always think about what kind of experiment is necessary, what kind of technology is possible to use, how to show the object of the class, its conclusion, etc.
