Experience Summary
Having earned a Ph.D. in Biostatistics from one of the top statistics schools in the country, I not only know the mathematics behind statistical theory - I have applied statistics in a wide variety of research settings. An ongoing aspect of working as a statistician is using clear communication to explain techniques and results in layman's terms. I believe statistical knowledge is useful to everyone in everyday life and should be fun for the student to learn. I have tutored students on and off since I was an undergraduate. I can tutor all levels of mathematics, including calculus and trigonometry, and statistics. I am familiar with the local curriculum via substitute teaching and tutoring neighborhood students.
Teaching Style
I enjoy working one on one with a wide variety of students - those with solid backgrounds in mathematics, as well as those who have had difficulties with mathematics their entire lives. In fact, I believe that one of the biggest reasons a child/teen/adult needs tutoring in mathematical sciences often stems from something missing in their early years of learning math. I can tutor any aged person. I enjoy getting the student to relate - what is often an uncomfortable subject for them - to the real world and to enhance their own personal future opportunities. I work hard to get the student to become self-reliant and to teach them that "just concentrating and doing it" is half of the battle. I have a lot of patience for those trying to do their best, even if math or statistics just isn't their "thing".
