Experience Summary
I am currently working on my Master's degree in Elementary Education at the University of Nevada, Reno. It has been my life-long dream to help children realize their potential and achieve academic success. While pursuing my Master's degree I have tutored ESL students in English literacy and have worked as a substitute teacher for three years in the State of Nevada. Prior to pursuing my masters in Elementary Education, I completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in Anthropology. My undergraduate degree has given me a strong background in cultural studies and a good understanding of how different backgrounds can affect academic performance and success. While working with the City of South Lake Tahoe, I have gained experience developing educational programs where I taught students about local wildlife and wildlife conservation. Since moving to California in 2009, I have continued my education at UNR. I am currently pursuing an occupation where I can use my background to help young students achieve their academic potential.
Teaching Style
I come from a family with a rich history in teaching. I have several cousins, aunts and great aunts who work and have worked as teachers in the State of California. Like them, it is my dream and goal to make a positive difference in the lives of the students I teach and tutor. I have achieved this in my teaching experience by providing a welcoming and accepting educational environment where students are actively involved in the learning process. Certain theorists have helped me gain a broad understanding of the learning experience, which has helped me develop my teaching style. Two theories who have influenced my teaching style are Vygotsky's theory in social cognition and Piaget’s theory of mental development. These two theories have influenced my approach to teaching and have helped me to understand the learning process and my student's potential.
