Experience Summary
I have been working in education for over 6 years in a variety of settings. In San Francisco, I worked in a small non-profit independent school, an art and theatre-based after school program, and a public alternative school. Currently, I am working at Snacks Crossing in Pike Township. Over these years, I also tutored at the local Sylvan Learning Center. In each setting, I have always gravitated toward providing extra learning support wherever needed, whether that included special instruction for ESL, literacy, learning disabilities, or emotional/behavioral disabilities. I found in each experience that I can teach any subject to any student and I have always enjoyed working with the wide variety of age groups that these jobs required.
Teaching Style
My first priority when working one-on-one with a student is to establish a positive connection. This cultivates trust and helps them to open up and show me what they really need help with. During instruction, I use humor to retain attention and profuse amounts of praise to build self-esteem. In terms of instruction, my experience allows me to break down difficult concepts and explain them in new and interesting ways. Whenever possible, I use hands-on activities to reinforce learning.
