Experience Summary
As a voracious reader, I have always been interested in many subjects in the world, above and beyond what I have studied in school. I earned a bachelor's degree in English and a recent master's in international management with a focus on migrant education/bilingual education. I spent years working with faculty on books at the college level, helping them to tailor their work for nonreaders, for visual learners, and students whose interests are far different from their own bookish world.
So, for twenty years, I urged faculty to write for students as they are, not as they'd wish them to be. Then, I stepped back into the role of student and experienced the struggle to master a foreign language, and to learn how to write in that language. And I've had 3 1/2 years of direct experience tutoring ESL students to write papers in English, political science, and history. My tutoring/teaching/editing has spanned Ph.D.s, adults, young adults and young children. Everyone, no matter what their level of education needs help in crafting simple, clear and compelling stories for others to read or listen to.
Teaching Style
I believe that each student responds to direct personal interest in him or her as a person first, and then as a learner. A child yearns to be noticed and appreciated for his unique talents and interests, so I start there. I am a low-key but enthusiastic and energetic person who relates to the struggles of the learner. My goal is to help the child or young adult to find that aha experience that makes learning fun for them.
Whether the problem is grasping the idea in a reading passage, struggling to make a paragraph sound better, or learning how to summarize ideas, I gently work with people until they accomplish their goals.
