Experience Summary
None of my family had gone to college, so it was predicted I would not either. I had a hunger to learn, so I systematically worked full-time and studied part-time, earning eight major degrees in cities where they alowed residency rquirements to be met in such a way. I was young and energetic, so it was a lot of work, but a joy. It took about 15 years to finally earn my doctorate. Along the way, I earned certification in a half dozen fields (especially loved English, social stuides, and psychology). I was employed for decades in education, teaching full-time for five years, often teaching on the side when I was counselor or administrator. Except for my earliest years of employment (where I was often employed full-time in radio or newspaper), I often tutored along the way. I have been able to tutor part-time a good many years since I often come across young people (and adults) who need a little extra assistance in reading, writing or computing.
Teaching Style
I love teaching. While I have also been a counselor and administrator, I managed to be able to at least tutor along the way, with a few exceptional years. I found that children were especially responsive to me, so I often found myself with elementary children (who, under my tutelage, managed to "catch up" an/or improve their grade point average -- often to their parents' delight). Since I love learning, children and teens "catch" my enthusiasm, and invariably get caught up with my honest excitement about a suject. Learning is a terrific discovery process, and mastery of data and sills makes one far more confident. My enthusiasm is absolutely sincere (you cannot act out a love for learning, without being discovered). As a tutor, I quickly find out the level a student is performng in (there are practical ways, even without achievement tests), and I soon am able to ascertain his motivation. I tap whatever motivation I can initially find, but add to it for optimal results. Most students soon get "caught up" with the fervor, to some degree, affecting their efforts. Since I was also a school psychologist and counselor, I am always able to take each child at his own level, facilitating (rewarding/recognizing prowess--any of their progress) any way I can.
