Experience Summary
As a graduate student working toward my Ph.D., I teach two college courses each semester called Introduction to Literature. My own studies are on Victorian novels, Renaissance poetry, and modern fiction, but my experience teaching introductory courses has given me a broad range of knowledge and teaching expertise in other areas of literature as well. I am also an experienced tutor in science and math. My bachelor's degree was a double major in English and Biology, and I worked as a tutor of both subjects as an undergrad. I also tutored fellow students in mathematics, including basic calculus.
Teaching Style
My teaching style is based on maintaining high expectations and students' personal responsibility for their own learning, while always taking a patient and encouraging approach. I have found learning to be an exciting and energizing experience, and I believe it can be so for my students as well. I always try to find the spark that will bring the topic to life for the student and will help them to take hold of their curiosity to use it as a tool for discovery. Science, math, and art are all simply different ways of putting that curiosity to work understanding the world, and so in my tutoring I try to guide the student's own natural creativity to help them learn, so that their learning can continue even after I am gone.
