Experience Summary
I received my Bachelors of Arts degree from Willamette University, where I majored in politics and minored in economics. I chose to work for a Bachelor's of Arts degree because it stresses a strong understanding of all subjects - this is the core of my approach to learning and education. During my senior year of high school I tutored math and science at a middle school for one year, and prior to this spent several years babysitting and assisting elementary school-aged children with their studies. Though my experience is limited to tutoring, it came easily to me and I am confident that I can help others better understand what I have already learned. As a student that has earned consistently high marks and test scores, I am in a great position to do this.
Teaching Style
In my own experience, the key to learning has been to find a "critical link:" that is, to figure out an angle that makes sense to my brain. It is one thing to be exposed to a subject, and another to understand, remember and easily employ what is learned. Everybody thinks differently, so the key is to discuss and explore the topic with a student until you see that they've experienced that "aha" moment. This is why tutoring is so important, in my opinion. This is the core of the approach I take to tutoring my peers, presenting ideas to professors, and to teaching younger students.
