Experience Summary
My objective, as a graduate of Pacific Lutheran University (May, 2007) with a B.S. degree in Biology and Chemistry, is to pursue a life of action in social justice and environmental protection. I want to use my life for something tangible and productive. I am articulate, responsible, dependable, reliable and well-educated. Though I have a strong background in science, with significant lab and research experience, I discovered my passion for working with people with diverse backgrounds while studying abroad in both British Columbia and South Africa working with, learning about, and talking to, the indigenous peoples of both places. Suddenly the global oppression of indigenous populations and native habitats and the urgent need for change through advocacy and action was thrust upon me. I became very aware of education as the foundation of social justice and equality, and the need for action domestically.
I currently have the fortunate opportunity to work as a programs coordinator for the Mi Casa Neighborhood Center in Lake Middle School (DPS) and, on the weekends, as a therapeutic recreation instructor for adults with developmental disabilities. I love working with youth and families, especially from those populations that have been pushed aside by the ‘majority’. In my time at Mi Casa I have been fortunate enough to experience forging relationships with volunteers, parents, teachers and community partners to support our students. I believe it really does take a village to raise a child and I intend to support our entire village for the sake of our children.
Teaching Style
It is my job as a tutor to approach each child as an individual. I use my own creativity and experiences to find different ways of teaching the same material in order to find the way that works best for that particular child. It is a very rewarding experience and one that the child should find positive also. I've had very good results from my methods and am very pleased with my students' progress.
