Experience Summary
I completed my semester of student teaching at Center High School in Kansas City in December 2002. Upon graduation I joined AmeriCorps. During my second year of service I developed and taught a variety of subjects related to public safety and service in St. Louis City elementary and middle schools after school programs. I have also worked as a camp counselor in Maine and volunteer coach girls softball in my community. In addition to coaching and teaching school age students I also instructed Community Education classes for adults in First Aid/CPR and Disaster Response Preparedness.
Teaching Style
While attaining my degree I learned many different techniques and styles of teaching, mainly based on the multiple intelligences. I believe everyone learns in different style and it is my job as a teacher to make sure all of the learning styles are being met during a lesson. I believe in coming up with new and creative lessons that keep the students engaged. In addition, I try to make every lesson relevant to the students life. I encourage students to problem solve and discover answers rather then stand and lecture. My goal is not only for students to learn what is in the textbooks but gain confidence, how to think independently, and attain life skills.
