Experience Summary
I have always been motivated not only to succeed in school, but by a real curiosity and passion for learning. (I'm a professional journalist, which means it's my job to ask "Why?" and find the answer). My bachelor's degree is in history, but I also took lots of classes in the social sciences and humanities. As a journalist, I have stellar writing and editing skills. At Dartmouth, I served as Executive Editor of the daily student newspaper, where I mentored writers and junior editors, working closely with them one-on-one to generate article ideas and polish their writing. I have tutored middle and schoolers in Latin, English/writing and math. I love working with children of all ages and have extensive experience babysitting, as well as working as a camp counselor.
Teaching Style
I have always adored children- I wanted to babysit back when I needed babysitters myself. I grew up with two excellent models for effective teaching: My parents, both English professors at Williams College, were encouraging, inspiring and hands-on when I needed help, pleased when I achieved something impressive but not overly critical when I messed up. I try to emulate that style. I work extremely well one-on-one and believe firmly in encouraging students and building on their existing skills to help them learn new ones. As a journalist, I'm an experienced listener, which I believe is vital to being a successful teacher and tailoring one's approach to the individual child.
