Experience Summary
I have actually attended three universities, including Miami of Ohio and the University of MN where I studied political science. I recently took the GRE, thus I am familiar with college and what is required to succeed. During my first writing class at Metropolitan State University,I was approached to become a tutor. My first day was in October, 2006, and I am still tutoring. I work with a diverse student population, including ESL students, and I am expected to help in any subject or genre for both undergraduate and graduate students. Although I primarily work with adults, I do enjoy all ages and mentored a teenager in 2007 for a year long program. I am still in contact with this young man who was considered at risk, and I consider him a friend.
Teaching Style
I enjoy when there is a connection between educator and student, and that student is able to apply wisdom to solve problems, and ultimately succeed throughout life. Most students that have difficulty with class seem, to me, to not have confidence in their abilities or potential. I believe in always looking for something positive when tutoring, and to build from a foundation of hope. Motivation and an understanding of the joy and benefits of learning are elements I try to instill in students. I also understand that at times I am wrong, and, more importantly, that I can learn from my students. Respecting a student, listening carefully to their concerns, and grasping where there is a block to their learning are key to adjusting what and how to teach him or her. Great teaching involves great communication.
