Experience Summary
During my years at Rocky Mountain College, I not only gained my degree in Literature with a minor in writing, but I also began teaching. As a student, I tutored an adorable foreign exchange student for a semester. I also served as a senior editor to the student publication Soliloquy, in which I selected, edited, and arranged writing pieces in the journal. I was also the dorm paper advisor, charging only a box of Chewy Chips Ohoy cookies for my paper editing skills, answering questions as to why you needed a period there instead of the never ending run-on sentence. After graduating, I stayed on at the college as the Activities Director and taught 3 freshman orientation classes. The classes were designed to help new freshman transition from high school or a work experience to college classes.
Teaching Style
I believe in a multifaceted approach to the different types of learners, aural, visual, kinesthetic, and reading/writing and aim to incorporate all learning styles in my teaching. I watched my brother struggle through school and learning disabilities all his life, so I tutored him through math and English since 7th grade. I found if you connect with a student and create ways that speak to him, you can foster learning. I helped my brother write flow charts on full-length mirrors to chart plotlines from books. He was a kinesthetic learner and this method of engaging worked for him. If you don’t create an environment that the students enjoy, they’ll keep texting or turn on their ipod again. The door of learning opens by discovering which type of learner a student is, and creating teaching tools that appeal to him/her. Through patience, kindness, encouragement, and some creative assignments, students realize they truly do enjoy learning and unleash their own potential.
