About Me

Experience Summary

I have worked in both counseling positions as well as teaching in many different settings and with students ranging in ages. I have my Masters in Education in school counseling from Hunter College and my B.A. in Psychology from Stony Brook University. My last position as a tutor for students throughout Queens as part of the No Child Left Behind Act. Through this job, I have gained even more knowledge and insight into the daily life of students throughout the New York City area. I have taught in many pre-schools, camps, and alternative programs which have given me first hand knowledge of the classroom and I have acquired leadership skills from leading students in daily lessons plans and schedules. My internship at New Rochelle High School and practicum at Scarsdale Middle School has provided me with many supervised hours of counseling as well as hands on experience with my own case load of students and running groups. I have observed many different counselors styles fine tuning my own. Two of the main counseling practices were college advising or post secondary planning and social skills building where I gained a great deal knowledge and experience in both areas.

Teaching Style

The first strategy that I use is building a relationship with the student by getting to know who they are, what there favorite things are, subjects, goals etc... This helps me discover what strategies I can use to help them learn. I also try to discover which learning method works best. Are they visual or auditory learner? Do they learn by having things taught step by step, or do they learn through visual or read aloud examples? I believe that every student has the ability to learn and to succeed; it is about finding the best strategy and providing that extra support. Being that advocate for students is the reason I went into school counseling.

My Hobbies

Love to do anything creative.

Subject Commentary

ADD/ADHD This is one of my top subjects! Proficiency: Expert
Have worked with a few students who have been diagnosed with ADD/ADHD as well as have my own experience in dealing with it myself and succeeding. Understanding this learning disorder, gives me great insight into the inner workings of the minds of these children. This knowledge allows me to teach them skills which will enable them to overcome some of the obstacles they will face during their academic career. I will teach them study skills, organization, and ways to remain focused. Everyone has a way to occupy his/her need to wonder by finding something physical to do alongside listening to the lesson at hand. I find keeping my hands busy by doodling fulfill my need to do something physical while still allowing me to focus on what the teacher is saying and take notes etc...

Homework Help This is one of my top subjects! Proficiency: Expert
Great at homework help. I am a quick learner, so even subjects I have not familiarized myself in a long time, can be learned in moments and I will be able to help your child. I have assisted in homework help since I was a mentor at the girls and boys club in high school. Your child will never miss a homework assignment and will be responsible for doing the work themselves with the assistants of myself. Part of homework help is also organizational skills. Those skills are necessary in order to make sure all expected work is being done and handed in on time.
