Experience Summary
As the daughter of an English teacher, I grew up accustomed to correct grammar and word usage, and to correction of my errors! I didn't always appreciate learning the correct use of English, but have since learned how valuable it is. Without the ability to speak and write correctly, individuals are limited in their ability to express their ideas and present themselves. I have taught public presentation and writing for years. For the past three years, I have been teaching at an open-enrollment college where I spent hours in the Student Success Center, tutoring several students who needed additional assistance to pass their English classes and write effective papers in other classes. In addition to remedial reading, public speaking, and basic college English, I taught a course in college success, equipping students with study skills and time management tools to help them succeed in school and in life.
Teaching Style
I am a warm and friendly teacher. Students are encouraged in whatever manner works best for them individually. For many, this takes the form of a friendly, cajoling encouragement. Others need reassurance of their capabilities. Regardless of the student, I find that success feeds their success. I try to find out what is of interest to my students, and to present the material as it relates to that interest. This keeps them motivated to listen and to learn. As they learn, I make sure they realize that they have experienced success. Encouragement and reinforcement of achievements are central to my interactions with every one of my students. I truly believe that, with the right approach and reinforcement of what they've learned, all students are capable of achieving their goals.
