Experience Summary
At the outset of the personal computer revolution I sold and supported Tandy computers. As part of the support function I instructed clients in the use of their computers. A whole new world blossomed for me. Teaching clients to use their computers turned out to be a long term and very rewarding experience.
During my thirteen years as The Computer Tutor I encountered a multitude of student learning difficulties. By working with the individual students, creative solutions were structured and successfully executed. Tutoring the non-traditional students to achieve their goals was by far the greatest reward. Their resulting change in demeanor was very heart warming. What more can a teaching professional ask? Having a very positive impact on a student’s life and be paid for it.
Teaching Style
Three teachers impacted my life not only as a result of the content of their classes but in their delivery. All three approached learning as an adventure. Even though the topics ranged from sixth grade mathematics to fluid dynamics each teacher keyed their presentation on the reception of the students. If the first presentation didn’t get the topic across an alternative presentation was made, often in a humorous vein. Students were never allowed to feel inadequate.
Many of the students I trained were sent by their employers. So often, the student’s frame of mind wasn’t the most open to the learning experience. By presenting the content in a light-hearted manner, the stress levels were reduced considerably! Hence, we were able to more effectively deliver the desired knowledge with greater retention. Consequently, I prefer a teaching style that puts the student at ease while we share the learning adventure.
