Experience Summary
As an English major at the University of Florida, I found a love for language learning and language acquisition; as a result, I declared Linguistics and TESL as additional majors. In these majors, I became quit ept at understanding grammatical principles and language learning theory. I began volunteering my knowledge to foreign language learners and found that I loved helping others learn. After receiving my BA, I began teaching writing and reading to native and non-native speakers at Santa Fe Community College in Gainesville, FL. As an English teacher, I also found other job opportunities at labs on campus and with private tutoring companies. One of the labs I worked in, the CLAST lab, also tutored math: college algebra, statistics, geometry, and logic. In this lab, I learned how to effectively teach math as well. In addition, I began teaching speed reading with a private seminar group. I love teaching and helping others succeed. Most recently, I have been using my teaching experience and writing knowledge to grade the essay section of the SAT exam. Over the past six years, I have been teaching and tutoring development reading and writing to native and non-native speakers, English composition, math, and speed reading.
Teaching Style
I love teaching, and I have experience working with varied age levels and learning levels. As a private tutor, I have also worked with many students who have varying learning disabilities, and I have used my knowledge to help develop techniques that help them learn too. One of my greatest strengths is my ability to express complex information to diverse groups of people in an understandable way. Everyone thinks a little differently and learns differently too. I practice patience and enthusiasm with my students. I work independently with my students to find out what type of learner they are. I create a friendly rapore with my students and use constructive criticism. Teaching through theory doesn't work with every student, so I often find ways to incorporate my students' interests into their learning. I believe that learning should be fun, so I always try to make my students laugh and enjoy our time together.
