Experience Summary
For the past three years I have been teaching physics, chemistry, and physical science at Silver Creek High School in Longmont, CO. Prior to Silver Creek, I was raising two children of my own, teaching/tutoring part time and volunteering in public school systems both in the U.S. and abroad. Having spent 15 years of my life in South Africa and New Zealand, I have a unique cultural background, an appreciation for diversity in all walks of life, and a commitment to academically rigorous education that rivals or exceeds international standards. I am endorsed in secondary science and also have 30 credit hours in Social Studies. I have Bachelors degrees in biology and education, a Masters degree in geography, 4 years of research experience at the University of Colorado, and thirteen years of experience teaching at every level of the educational system.
Teaching Style
I believe that vibrant, approachable teachers who have both a passion for teaching and a healthy sense of humor can create an atmosphere where learning is not drudgery, but exciting, challenging, and fun. Teachers must have an engaging manner, a solid background in their content area and also be very organized. They must show the practical application and personal relevance of the material. The content should be taught in a creative manner that caters to a variety of learning styles. This should include experiential, discovery-based, and integrated learning whenever possible. Such methods will encourage higher-level thinking and guide students in developing problem solving skills. Good teachers view every child as a unique and interesting human being. No amount of academic prowess or field experience can take the place of sheer enjoyment of children or that little bit of magic we recognize in someone who was “born to teach.”
