Experience Summary
I am a retired Boulder valley teacher and I have taught from the preschool to college level for over 20 years. Most recently, I worked as an ESL and reading teacher. My training was modeled after reading recovery and involved one year of supervised teaching one-on-one with children who were struggling readers. The goal of this training is to help children work with their strengths as readers, rather than focusing on their weaknesses. Children learn the strategies that they need in order to be successful, independent readers. The work I do with them is very focused and begins with a thorough diagnostic assessment of their reading abilities. I have six years of experience working one-on-one with children to improve their reading. I also have extensive experience teaching and writing with both native English speakers and second language learners from the elementary to college level. I enjoy working with students of all cultural and language backgrounds. I am able to tutor in both Spanish and English.
Teaching Style
I love teaching and working with both children and adults. I am very good at establishing rapport particularly with children who are struggling and with ESL. My goal as a tutor is to give my students the skills and strategies they need to be successful and feel good about themselves as independent learners. I use a variety of engaging activities that capture the student's imagination and interest, while at the same time staying focused on their particular needs.
