Experience Summary
My introduction to teaching occurred when I was selected by two university departments to be a Graduate Assistant. Among my many duties were the presentation of classes and the grading of papers. As an officer in the United States Army I have been responsible for training and teaching at many levels. As a new lieutenant I directly supervised the training of a team of nine young soldiers. In my latest military position the documents that my organization created will affect the training of thousands of soldiers over several decades. In my position as a licensed secondary school level teacher I presented classes through lecture format in the Socratic style. In order to touch on multiple intelligences I extensively use many different projects to stimulate the student's thought and knowledge application processes. I have tutored many subjects but feel that I am strongest in mathematics, social studies and literature. I am comfortable teaching many age levels from middle school to adult.
Teaching Style
I have found that no matter how much anyone person would like to teach, no one can force someone to learn. With that in mind, if I remember to approach each student as an individual with his or her own abilities, concerns, and goals, I will have a more successful result as an educator. I have learned that each individual has at least one trigger, for want of a better word, which will entice them unconsciously to want to learn. One of my goals is to find that element. No matter how “cool” a student is, most only want to be listened to, I have a talent for doing just that.
