Experience Summary
My BA in sociology has enabled me to develop an objective understading of society. Therefore, I have been able to apply my soical understanding in ways that promote growth and development for myself and those who are around me. Through my one year of service as a tutor in the Americorps National Service Organization I have learned how to work with students from many different segements of society, and also embrace the challenge of tutoring subects which fall outside my circle of experties such as math and science. While fufilling my duties as a graduate student and teaching assistant in my former university's History department, I have written and graded numerous short essays, research papers, as well as term papers. These experiences have also allowed me to develop my skills as a writer and proof reader. Therefore,through the years I have enjoyed tutoring students in the subjects of English, History, and Social Studies.
Teaching Style
I believe that paitience, discipline, and focus on the part of the student and the teacher/tutor results in consistant success as a students attempts to learn and achieve. Although I do feel that conventional methods of teaching are still effective, I also believe that implementing audio visual aids, as well as hands on learning are also productive teaching methods. Supplemented with the reward merit system, I have found these approaches to be successful. Every student has the ability to learn if someone is willing help them. Moreover, I am a firm believer that positive reinforcement is an essential part of the learning process. Any student who has confidence that they can learn and achieve will learn and achieve.
