Experience Summary
Since I graduated from the University of Michigan, I have spent a lot of time helping young adults learn and "learn how to learn". I majored in Japanese language and literature and later earned a masters in TESOL from the College of New Rochelle. I taught three levels of Japanese language and advanced ESOL at Manhattan Center for Science and Mathematics High School in Harlem. After school, I served as an advisor to two clubs: The Anime and Origami Clubs. I served as an advisor and helped the students raise funds for ongoing projects. I also created a peer tutoring club where students help other students in their strongest subjects in exchange for help in the areas where they are lacking.
Teaching Style
I find that many students in high school are not ready for college and struggle when they attend. The reason they are not ready is because they do not spend much time learning how to learn. I believe the main job of teachers is to teach students learning skills and strategies. We all have different abilities and strenghths, but we can all learn these strategies. My teaching style is to give students a strong feeling of safety and structure and then help them to create and attain their learning goals. I like to keep the classroom a positive environment, condusive to learning.
