Experience Summary
As a special education teacher, I worked with students with learning and emotional disabilities, ADHD, autism, and cognitive impairments in grades K-12. I was responsible for modifying and presenting curriculum across all subject areas. I began tutoring as an undergraduate, providing assistance in psychology and writing courses, as well as teaching group classes and providing individual tutoring for SAT and GRE preparation. Over the past 7 years, I have worked with students as young as 3, providing early intervention for communication delays, and with students in K-12 and beyond. I have most recently tutored students in basic reading skills, middle school math, algebra, geometry, and HS level biology, English, and history, as well as provided test preparation tutoring for the SAT, ACT, and GRE. In the context of tutoring students in their current subjects, I have also assisted students in improving their writing, organizational, and study skills.
Teaching Style
Whenever I begin working with a student, I assess their skills and identify the areas of concern. Are they lacking the prerequisite skills for a class they are struggling with? Are they struggling because they need more repetition and review, or because they lack organizational skills? Identifying the area of weakness makes it possible for me to individualize my tutoring to meet a student’s learning styles and needs. My goal in tutoring is not only to target the areas of weakness to allow a student to succeed, but also to help them become more aware of their areas of weakness and strengths. Tutoring should not only help students master the material in their current classes, but also help students develop effective study strategies and problem solving skills that will allow them to complete their work independently, when their tutor isn't there and succeed in both current and future classes.
