Experience Summary
I received a BS in Molecular and Cellular Biology from the University of Arizona with an interdisciplinary minor in chemistry, physics, and mathematics. My experience after graduating from college is diverse having pursued careers in the military, science, and education. After an honorable medical discharge from the Marines, I worked for several scientific private and academic research laboratories gaining invaluable hands-on experience. My first teaching assignment was at Excel High School where I taught Algebra II honors and Pre-calculus. In addition to teaching at Excel, I volunteered with Prevention Now and City on a Hill’s AIM high program where I prepared E.L.L. students for the Massachusetts equivalent of the DSTP in both math and English. In the past year, I have substituted for Red Clay School District while preparing for Delaware certification. Through all of these experiences, I have grown as an educator, gaining respect and knowledge.
Teaching Style
As an educator in math and science, subjects viewed by many students as “hard” or “boring,” I strongly believe that these fields need not be viewed this way. Teachers who have a strong background in math and science, such as myself, can more easily relate class work to everyday life and career prospects, making the subject more relevant and interesting. I believe that when teaching any subject, one must start with a clear set of objectives and goals which are to be realized by the end of the teaching session. It is the responsibility of the educator to modify his or her lesson plans to best meet the needs of the student. At the same time, the lesson must not just provide the information needed, but allow the student to immerse themselves in the subject matter and strive beyond basic understanding.
