Experience Summary
As both a college graduate of a renowned institution like Stanford University and a high school graduate of a local public school, Palmer High School, I have seen how education and motivation go hand in hand. I am passionate about empowering students to realize their full potential within our formal education systems in order to have the tools to further their own, unique dreams. Through my art history classes at Stanford and through completing the rigorous thesis writing process, I have mastered many of the researching, editing, and style requirements of writing. Furthermore, I learned to be adept in time management, organization, and study skills. Finally, by being a part of the International Baccalaureate program in high school, which requires students to take all subjects at an advanced level, I have gained a high level of achievement in high school math (calculus included), science (chemistry, particularly), history, and German.
Teaching Style
I believe that the best way to learn is to set goals which may seem challenging at first, but are within reach of a student’s abilities. Learning should be a process of discovery and may require looking at a subject from many different angles. I am good at understanding a child’s personality and finding out how he or she learns best. If understanding abstract concepts proves difficult at first, I will look for practical applications which make the process clearer. If not having proper study skills is causing a lack of understanding, I will sit down with a student and set out a clear system of weekly objectives. I think that one-on-one tutoring is an incredible learning environment for students as it allows them to be in a comfortable and encouraging setting. Creating this place, in turn, prompts them to take chances and push themselves toward their academic potential.
