About Me

Experience Summary

In 1994, I earned a Bachelor's degree from Oberlin College with a major in Creative Writing and a minor in Politics. From there, I spent the next 13 years primarily working in the social service field serving young adults in various capacities as a counselor, educator, and facilitator. During this time, I spent two years working for a national education company tutoring middle and high school students. My main role in this position was to provide one-on-one in home tutoring to ready students for standardized tests such as the PSAT, SAT, and subject specific tests. Subjects I mainly tutored were the verbal portion of the SAT, writing, and grammar. In the Fall, I will be entering college again to pursue my Master's degree in Counseling Psychology.

Teaching Style

I believe in order to be the most effective teacher it is integral to discover what kind of learner your student is. For example, some students are linguistic learners and learn best through the use of words and verbal description. Others learn better with visual examples. Then there are some who learn best kinesthetically. Once I determine which style works best for the student and will therefore maximize their learning, I tailor what it is I'm trying to teach to meet that need. Something that is also very important to me when I am working with students is the relationship between student and teacher. I firmly believe that a student's success can be influenced and dependent upon a positive relationship with their teacher. When I am working with a student, I work to build an authentic connection based on mutual trust and respect. Addtionally, I look for opportunities to use affirmation because I believe it is an essential part in building a student's esteem and confidence. It is important to me that students feel empowered to speak up and participate in their learning proces. As a result, I make it a point to consistently encourage and solicit feedback about their experience. Overall, I am a very patient and caring teacher and am happy to adapt to each students individual needs.
