Experience Summary
I offer twenty years of practical experience applying complex mathematical ideas to analysis of environmental, military and security problems. I know how to relate mathematical concepts to problems faced in the workplace by today's technical workforce. Having authored dozens of technical reports, I can also help you organize and effectively communicate your academic work. I have bachelors and doctoral degrees in mathematics, with a masters degree in engineering science and applied mathematics.
Teaching Style
I believe that most mathematical ideas can be effectively communicated in visual and graphical forms. I make extensive use of diagrams, pictures, graphs and sketches to convey an intuitive understanding of concepts. I teach algebra and calculus by showing common patterns in mathematical operations, providing a sequence of exercises from simple to complex, and coaching students until they are confident they have mastered these operations. I am convinced that the only prerequisite to mastery of mathematics is a desire to learn and to study.
