Experience Summary
I have extensive experience teaching and tutoring ESL at the college, school, and adult education level. I have worked with nationally and ethnically diverse student populations which included both international students and American residents. I have taught all the ESL competencies: reading and writing, speaking, listening, accent reduction and business English. I have taught at DeVry University/Chicago, Oakton Community College in Skokie and Morton College in Cicero. Along with classroom teaching, I have done college-level and independent tutoring in ESL and English composition. Currently, I am teaching an ESL grammar course at Loyola University/Chicago and tutoring an international visitor through LT-Global, a Michigan-based tutoring company.
Teaching Style
My teaching approach is mainly student-oriented. ESL is a practical subject and a lot of lecturing doesn't help. I let my students experience the language by speaking, listening, reading and writing. I use critique for writing and peer correction for oral skills. I strive to present grammar points through examples and have students deduce the rules. In tutoring, I usually work on error correction and address the individual's weaknesses while enhancing his or her strengths.
