Experience Summary
Working with young adults to increase their understanding of a foreign language has always been my passion. I have found a new level of commitment and compassion through this type of work experience. As a university student I began what would be a lifelong journey into tutoring and teaching. I began tutoring college level Spanish during my freshman year in college. My students ranged greatly in their level of proficiency, which allowed me to increase my flexibility and teaching methodology. After earning a dual degree in Management and Spanish, I went on to work in the Business field. During this time, I dedicated more time to working in an office setting, and less time to teaching. However, I was still a dedicated volunteer and tutor of young adults at my hometown library.
After spending several very exciting and productive years in business, I was ready for a new experience. I joined the U.S. Peace Corps and was assigned to teach at a Secondary School in Mozambique, Africa. During my two year service and three month intensive language training, I acquired an extensive amount of information and experience in teaching. I became fluent in Portuguese very quickly and also gained a new understanding of the English Language. I had the opportunity to work with students of all levels, particularly students in the 8th, 9th, and 10th grade. I also taught night classes for adults and worked with young professionals looking to perfect their English skills. I can therefore say, that I have spent the last ten years perfecting my tutoring skills and exploring new areas of interest in teaching. And, I am just as enthusiastic and excited about teaching and tutoring as when I was a student myself!
Teaching Style
I enjoy working with young learners of all backgrounds and ages. I believe I have a natural talent for reading people and helping them feel comfortable and safe. My teaching style is a combination of all styles. I believe in discipline, dedication, homework and exams, and yet I also believe in being flexible and spontaneous. My goal is always to focus on an individual's need to feel safe, engaged and excited about learning a new subject. I help my students see for themselves what their strong points are and help them understand how to eliminate their weak areas. I believe in encouraging and pushing my students to excellence, without losing the essence of learning. Having fun and feeling engaged are what truly matter in every lesson. Seeing a smile on someone's face because they "get it" and seeing them gain confidence and proficiency is always a real treat!
