Experience Summary
During my past two years in graduate school, I have taught upper-level sociology courses primarily to college seniors and juniors. In addition to designing the content, curriculum, and evaluation criteria for these courses, I currently work as an award-winning mentor to other graduate student instructors. One year prior to teaching, I edited and graded hundreds of papers for an advanced course as a Writing Across the Curriculum Consultant. I have completed doctoral coursework, training, and examinations in sociology that included research methods, statistical analysis, social theory, and specialty concentrations in gender and sexuality. Before entering graduate school, I worked in New York City as a Health Educator advising inner-city adolescents around a wide variety of life skills. My subject areas of expertise include extensive writing and reading skills, advanced mathematics, and the general social sciences.
Teaching Style
As a tutor, I would work with students to meet individualized needs, allowing for adjustment of my style as appropriate. I operate under the assumption that all students are engaged in a lifelong process of learning. I seek to inspire learning through varied teaching formats, including lectures, discussions, reflective and reflexive writing, group exercises, audio/visual resources, and experiential learning methods. I highly value utilization of thoughtful reflection, careful analysis, and critical thinking skills. I strive to inspire students to relate learning beyond academic perimeters, and thus situate concepts within relevant historical contexts and cross-cultural examples. My considerable patience allows students to work through materials at their own paces, allowing for thorough understandings before proceeding to advanced levels. Finally, I communicate clearly and effectively and ensure this by continually checking in with students throughout the term.
