Experience Summary
My teaching experience was ultimately a learning experience for me. While attending Brown University to get my MFA in Fiction Writing, I also got the opportunity to teach two college courses in my discipline. What I find is that teaching ultimately blends all of my favorite qualities--listening, learning, discipline, direction and conversation--in order to be successful. I am blessed with a good, solid education from two fantastic institutions, Brown University and the University of Chicago. I have a wide range of experience from tutoring when I was younger. I also have the liberal arts foundation, and fantastic study habits, which will be useful tools to pass on to your son or daughter.
Teaching Style
My teaching style is direct, disciplined, relaxed and conversational. It will not work to just dictate to a student! The point, I think, in tutoring, is to develop good study habits and identify and discard the bad ones. Once we know what works, we can proceed from there. It is also a question of knowing that studying can be made interesting and fun. Most high schools serve up tedious, boring curricula in tedious, boring ways. Yes, there are some things that need to be memorized, there is some brain sweat involved, but overall I believe that my education is expansive enough to offer a new way that can rejuvenate your child's interest in learning and the subject matter involved.
