Experience Summary
I have enjoyed teaching in private schools of and on for the last 22 years. My bachelor degree in math and my years of experience in the classroom have allowed me to develop successful methods of student motivation and classroom discipline. Also, in recent years, I have tutored students one-on-one in my home where I have been successful pinpointing student's problem areas and addressing their individual needs. I am currently an adjunct instructor at Highland Community College in Wamego. I teach Beginning Algebra and Intermediate Algebra. I have also tutored College Algebra to some of my former students there. Finally, I truly enjoy mathematics and the opportunity that teaching offers me to communicate my mathematical skills to others.
Teaching Style
When teaching a math lesson I begin by going over skills already mastered that lead to the lesson at hand. After teaching the new material I then have the student try a similar problem while I watch. If necessary I coach them along, pointing out any problem areas. Then I require the student to try more of the same type of problems until he or she has mastered the new material. It's very important to me that the student understand what he or she is doing and why it works. In other words, I don't just teach them how to do individual problems.
