Experience Summary
While in graduate school at the University of Connecticut, I was a teaching assistant for a chemical engineering course on polymers as well as freshman chemistry. Both teaching assignments included: grading homework/test papers and providing office hours for students to visit me and go over problem solving. The chemistry class required me to actually be the teacher for 30 students each semester. Also, as a graduate student teaching assistant for freshman chemistry, I provided help sessions for students going over past test problems to prepare them for upcoming tests.
My senior year as an undergraduate at Purdue University. I was selected as a tutor to assist sophomore students with their homework.
Teaching Style
My approach to tutoring is not simply to regurgitate what the teacher has already said in the classroom. Students need to have tried to solve the problems on their own before I help them to get the most value from their experience with me. It does little good to the student for me to guide them entirely through each problem with out them first trying to figure it out on their own. First, this helps one to develop problem solving skills which is different from knowing the subject matter. Second, it allows me to adjust the problem solving techniques to that particular student.
