Experience Summary
With two degrees to my credit, along with a career of almost 15 years as a journalist and over 20 years as a jazz disc jockey, I possess the combination of education, experience and communication skills that have proven quite successful during my three years as a tutor at The English Center at San Diego City College. Principal strengths include writing, proofreading, editing, essay preparation and research in a wide variety of academic areas. In addition, I have worked extensively with ESL students of various ages and with varied backgrounds from all parts of the world.
Teaching Style
At The English Center, the focus is on creating a positive learning environment in a supportive setting. After establishing the agenda, a tutoring session ensues in which particular emphasis is placed on hands-on involvement, attention to detail, developing critical thinking skills and fostering self-empowerment. My style draws upon a variety of influences, including patience, enthusiasm and a healthy dose of humor. An unwritten goal of each session is to ensure that the student leaves with a greater understanding of the subject matter than when he arrived.
