Experience Summary
After receiving a PhD in chemistry from Purdue University I worked over 20 years in discovery research areas. I then turned to my calling of education and became a certified science teachers for grades 8-12. I taught middle school science for five years. I have since retired but love to stay connected to science and math education by tutoring. I have the gift of being able to take complex subject matter, make it easy to undersand and connect it to the real world.
Teaching Style
Students come with various background and motivation levels and ways of learning. A tutor needs to be able to discover within the student the best way for that student to learn. I believe students should be pressed not to memorize facts but to use critical thinking skills, tying things together and seeing relations so a multitude of similar problems can be solved.
There are many ways science can be taught. Over the years, I have found that tutoring works best by breaking the material down into mini lessons, give the students guided practice in solving problems (we solve it together), and then independent practice where the student demonstrates mastery of the concept.
