Experience Summary
As a graduate student, I tutored 5th graders in Math at Montevallo Elementary School. Through this experience, I learned that all students are different and require different ways and methods of teaching. I began to understand that being “in-tune” with children’s different learning styles was very important to be successful in reaching them.
I’ve also tutored a 3rd grade boy in reading for one summer. Helping the child build fluency and comprehension were my two main goals. We also worked on understanding word meaning and phonological awareness. I have also gained knowledge in tutoring my own son in all subjects.
Teaching Style
I firmly believe that all teachers need to do the following things in order to be a well-rounded and thorough instructor:
* be acutely aware of the core concepts to be taught
* have deep knowledge of facts
* organize related features and skills
* activate learners' prior knowledge and experiences
* design lessons based on national and state standards
* connect curriculum to other content areas
* Always provide accommodations in order to meet the needs of all students
* Work well with other faculty members.
In order for a successful teacher to accomplish the above, it would definitely take more than just a "little bit of knowledge," - rather, it takes thorough planning, conceptualizing, and calculating to be the best.
