Experience Summary
I have a very strong passion for learning and teaching various topics within Biology, such as studying genetics, microbiology, immunology, biochemistry, basic chemistry and basic math. I obtained a B.S. in Biology, cum laude at Allegheny College and will have the M.A. in Biochemistry from SUNY at Buffalo on 06/01/11. Because I have this strong passion I like to share it in hopes whoever I can teach can also appreciate it.
In college, I was a reading tutor for kids from K-5 grades. As it was primarily for reading. Also within college, I found myself helping my friends understand the material.
Teaching Style
In college, I tutored kids K-5 on primarily their reading skills. However, I also asked them if they needed any help with any other subject and what material was covered. From this I would put together study outlines from their notes and textbook. This allowed me to know ahead of time what should be emphasized. Also, when teaching a biology field to a more mature individual, I find that reading up on the material actually emphasizes my passion for the field. There also have been times I have made up mnemonics for certain biology topics, whether it is a rhyme, story, or parody of a song. I find that it makes learning the material easier and more enjoyable. My friends always have enjoyed them as the mnemonics always can create a laugh.
