Experience Summary
From 2003-08 I taught piano and tutored children and young adults in the Vancouver area in French, Language Arts, elementary Math, advanced ESL skills (writing, speaking, pronunciation, and grammar) in a one-on-one private setting. It was through a year-long experience as a foreign ESL teacher in Seoul, Korea (‘08-‘09) that I was truly able to learn effective and creative ways to engage classes and build great lessons from basic curriculum. Since 2009, I have taught piano and currently have 5 tutoring students, whom I tutor in advanced English pronunciation and grammar, college-level essay writing, elementary Math, elementary language arts, reading, and ESL skills. I also volunteer as an ESL tutor every week.
Teaching Style
My tutoring style is accommodating yet focused. I am keenly interested in what is relevant to the student, especially when there is room for creativity and flexibility in our tutoring times. I’m very prepared and organized for the lesson, but I am sensitive to students' input for each lesson. I strive to provide meaningful lessons and assistance to reach students’ goals. I incorporate games and activities with young students to review and solidify the students' understanding while maintaining a positive atmosphere. When the student looks forward to lessons, they are more willing to focus when the lesson is more difficult. With older students, I try to use relevant and interesting themes or material to keep the lesson enjoyable.
