Experience Summary
I recently graduated Cum Laude from DePaul University in June of 2010 with a Bachelors of Science in Biology. In my last year there I worked as a Supplemental Instruction Leader/Tutor for freshman students in general biology courses which had me sitting in on classes with them and leading interactive group study sessions. I also worked for a quarter as a Laboratory Teaching Assistant for a general biology course assisting them with lab work and experimental design. These positions gave me a good deal of experience in helping college level students study and understand biological concepts both in an academic and laboratory setting.
Teaching Style
From my experience working for the Supplemental Instruction Program, my teaching style revolves around an interactive approach that emphasizes participation. While in class, students are often expected to absorb information like a sponge from lectures. However, I believe that by structuring tutoring sessions in a way that encourage the student to come to the correct answers with help, rather than to be lectured at, is an overall more effective way to improve comprehension and retention of information. I believe this method also helps to develop self-confidence in a student's learning ability as well.
