I am a reading tutor certified in the Orton Gillingham approach of treating dyslexia. I completed the initial Orton Gillingham certification program through the IMSLEC/Chidlren's Dyslexia Center. My training included 45 hours of classroom instruction and 100 hours of practicum. The Orton Gillingham approach is widely used for individuals who have difficulties with reading, writing, and spelling. The approach is multi-sensory, structured and sequenced, explicit, cumulative, diagnostic, and prescriptive. My teaching style changes to fit the requirements of the subject and the needs of my students. I find that presenting and explaining works best for language arts and history, concept teaching works best for science, and direct instruction works best for mathematics. I try to devote the day to getting kids interested in learning while covering the topics necessary. I cater to each child's needs and abilities and try to use their strength's to help their weaknesses. For example when teaching foreign language, if a child is not as strong in language as they are in math, I try to use formulas to portray language in a more concrete manner. I attended The Ohio State University and got my Bachelors degree in Human Development and Family Sciences with a concentration in Early Childhood Development. While working on my Japanese minor I quickly discovered that finding a method that works for an individual student is the most important part of studying productively.
