Special Education Teacher

Focus on direct instruction based on needs assessment and data driven evaluation as needed.
As a current student studying special education and literacy instruction, I have had the opportunity to learn the newest and most recently researched "best practices" in teaching. I am currently certified in Special Education. My teaching experience has been significantly enhanced by my experience as a mother of a ten year old with special needs. I believe in creating a positive, professional atmosphere in a tutoring setting. I assess students based on specific needs expressed (by the student, parent, and/or teachers) and plan my instruction based on the data provided in assessment. I use researched methods in my instruction with a focus on direct instruction, modeling, guided practice, and continuous informal assessment. I have high expectations for my students as I believe that my j ... read more

My comments on tutoring Dyslexia : Orton Gillingham Certified Dyslexia Tutor

I am a reading tutor certified in the Orton Gillingham approach of treating dyslexia. I completed the initial Orton Gillingham certification program through the IMSLEC/Chidlren's Dyslexia Center. My training included 45 hours of classroom instruction and 100 hours of practicum. The Orton Gillingham approach is widely used for individuals who have difficulties with reading, writing, and spelling. The approach is multi-sensory, structured and sequenced, explicit, cumulative, diagnostic, and prescriptive. Previously, I graduated from Ohio State University with a Master's degree in Teaching ESL K-12. I have five years of teaching experience.

Dyslexia is one of my top subjects! As an Intervention Specialist of 18 years, my specialization is the intervention of reading disabilities and dyslexia with students in grades K-12. I have completed Basic and Advanced courses through the Orton Gillingham Academy and am certified as a classroom teacher with over 300 hours of students instructional time using the Orton Gillingham method of instruction.

For the past 18 years I have provided special education services to students in grades K-12. After further specializing in the intervention of reading disabilities and dyslexia, I exclusively instruct students using the Orton Gillingham Method. My experience ranges from working with kindergarten students, to high school students, who are preparing for post secondary education. My background in foreign language and linguistics (Russian) has prepared me to work successfully with students, who are English language learners or have identified needs in Speech and Language. After completion of the Basic and Advanced courses through Orton Gillingham Academy, I completed a 50 hour practicum under the supervision of an Orton Gillingham Fellow, with continuing certification through the Academy in progress. Early Childhood Educator and Encourager

I have over thirty years teaching experience in the Chicago Public Schools. I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology, a Master of Arts degree in special education, and a Master of Divinity degree. I have taught children ages 3 - 15 and tutored youth up to age 18. I am particularly skilled at helping young children develop readiness skills.
I believe that learners are most successful when they are confident in their abilities. I generally begin by assessing a child's present independent functioning level and slowly building on that. Nothing is more motivating than intrinsic rewards, so I strive to make the learner aware of their growth. I encourage them to celebrate every break through and to minimize the importance of errors. I stress that errors are simply stepping stones to the next level of competence.

A Little Bit About Me...

I try to devote the day to getting kids interested in learning while covering the topics necessary. I cater to each child's needs and abilities and try to use their strength's to help their weaknesses. For example when teaching foreign language, if a child is not as strong in language as they are in math, I try to use formulas to portray language in a more concrete manner. I enjoy working with children of all ages and find that they enjoy working with me due to the enthusiasm I show them.
Since high school I have been aware that I wanted to teach. I am currently pursueing a Masters of Education, and finishing one of my specializations, (French). I have taught for several businesses. I also taught for the Worthington Public School system as a volunteer and teaching asssistant.

I believe that every child should be given an equal chance to learn. If that means teaching a lesson three different ways to be sure to reach all my students, sometimes that is what it takes. Being flexible is very important in teaching, as it is important to be able to adapt to each student and each class, year to year. I think that all studnets can meet their potential if given appropriate chance and I strive to give students that chance.
I attended The Ohio State University and got my Bachelors degree in Human Development and Family Sciences with a concentration in Early Childhood Development. After that I continued my education at Capital University to obtain my teaching license for PK-3 regular classroom education, as well as Intervention Specalist K-12 and a Reading Endorsment K-12.

I feel very strongly that every child has the ability to learn when they are given the right encouragement. While working on my Japanese minor I quickly discovered that finding a method that works for an individual student is the most important part of studying productively. I feel that my fresh, creative outlook will supplement the classroom experience well and offer alternative methods to learning that may not be available at your child's school.
While I have not tutored academically in the past, I have taught my community's equivalent of the DARE program to fourth grade classes for two years and have also taught art lessons to children of all ages.

More About This Tutor...

As a recent college graduate, I feel that I have received the formal training necessary to become a teacher. I have obtained a BS in Early Childhood Education. Over the past two years I have also spent time tutoring elementary school children in the subject of reading, and also spent about 3 months working one on one with various students in a nearby school district.
I believe that all children should receive the extra help that they need. Often time in the classroom, a teacher does not have the time to give the support of the needs of each student in the classroom. Teachers and tutors should try their best to make sure they focus on individual needs of the students so that they can help them succeed.

A child needs to have fun throughout the learning process. He learns best when he is excited and interested. He needs to be able to choose his own books to read. This usually entails a trip to the library. And from there, we start with shared readings, repeated readings, running records, echo readings and choral readings, just to name a few.
As a teacher, accountant, mother of 4, I have seen so many changes in education. Thank goodness, we are looking more at the student as an individual than as a cookie cutter kid. One size does not fit all. My passion, is to instill the love of reading into all children, as I did with my own, and as I try to with my high school students. Reading is the base of all education. If a student struggles here, it will show in all classes. I use a method where I find out exactly where a student is in his reading, and through running records, I ... read more
