My comments on tutoring Reading : I specialize in Dyslexia and use the Barton Reading & Spelling System. This program is Orton-Gillingham Influenced and was designed for Dyslexic students. However, it is benefical for other learning disabilities as well.

After graduating with my Bachelors Degree, I worked in a Residential Treatment Center for abused children for two years. One year of this experience took place in a classroom setting to assist teachers with behavior issues. Upon receiving my California Teaching Credential, I worked in California public schools teaching in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grades. I have experience teaching all subjects, K-12 from homeschooling my own children. For the last 3 years I have been using the Barton Reading and Spelling System to tutor. Being a student who had reading comprehension in early grades, I understand the shyness and frustration many students have with this difficulty. I respond to them with compassion, and often open up to them with a short story of my own experience. This way the student feels that I understand them and are more willing to learn the material I am trying to teach them.
