I am a huge advocate of learning 'why' something happens vs 'how' it happens. In mathematics, anyone can learn a formula, an expression, or an equation if they look at it enough times, but they would not know how to apply it in real life situations. However, if a students learns the application of the formula and how it works, bigger chances they will remember it or can derive it when recalling the information. Learning the 'why' WILL lead to learning the 'how'
I have excelled in mathematics going all the way back to elementary school. Studied general mathematics in college. A Little Bit About Me...

I have recently recieved a BS in Biology from Fort Valley State University in May 2010. I am a graduate of an accelerated program called the Cooperative Developmental Energy Program, which is a program that focuses only on the math and science fields and also required me to earn my BS in 3 years while maintaining a GPA of 3.0 or above. In addition, I have worked as a childcare provider during the summers at a daycare center where I was required to help create and carry out lesson plans to ensure that the children did not lose what they had learned during the school year.

What I have learned working with students is that many do not learn in the same manner. I beleive in what is called top process learning. Given the student a concept and allowing them to explore the possibilities of how one arrives at such a concept has allowed deeper critical thinking and strategic planning. However, this method is not predominately taught in Georgia education system. I have found this method to be very effective. The other method is patience. Students who strugge with their academic learning usually are having other areas of difficulty which may be social learning. Having clinical training allows me to make a more accurate assessment.

In high school, I was the typical overachiever. I played varsity baseball, led many school organizations, and was at the top of my class. School, especially math subjects, came easy to me, but that is not the case with everyone. Therefore, I wanted to find a way to help students in these areas. During sophomore year, I was approached by high school administration to tutor students, on a one-on-one basis after school, on math subjects. A commercial banker by trade, I currently teach two (2) classes on financial literacy skills to legal immigrant refugees from India, Burma, and Cuba. This volunteer work is offered through the Catholic Charities arm of the Archdiocese of Atlanta. I started teaching these classes roughly six (6) months ago on a volunteer basis, and the classes have been very well received thus far.
